BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2008-2013 128i and 135i Convertibles, 128i, 135i, and M Coupes, 2007-2010 X3 30si and X3 xDrive30i, 2013-2015 X1 sDrive28i, X1 xDrive28i and X1 xDrive35i, 2007-2013 328i, 328i xDrive, 335i, 335is, 335i xDrive and M3 Coupes, 2006-2011 328i, 328xi, 328i xDrive, 325i, 325xi, 330i, 330xi, 335i, 335xi, 335i xDrive and M3, 2009-2011 335D, 2006-2012 325xi, 328i, 328xi and 328i xDrive, 2010-2011 X6 ActiveHybrid, 2007-2013 328i, 335i, 335is, M3 Coupes, X5 30si, X5 xDrive30i, X5 xDrive35i, X5 48i, X5 xDrive48i, X5 xDrive50i and X5 M, 2009-2013 X5 xDrive35d and 2008-2014 X6 xDrive35i, X6 xDrive50i and X6M vehicles equipped with non-desiccated driver frontal air bag inflators containing phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) that were used as interim remedy parts for previous Takata recalls. These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.
Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver air bag. On X5 and X6 vehicles, only the inflator will be replaced. All repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began March 11, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2008-2011 128i and 2007-2011 328i, 328xi, 328i xDrive, 525i, 525xi, 528i, 528xi, 530i, 530xi, X3 3.0si, X3 xDrive30i, X5 xDrive30i, Z4 3.0i, Z4 3.0si and Z4 sDrive30i vehicles. The heater for the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve may short circuit.
Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the PCV valve heater, free of charge. Interim letters were mailed on November 27, 2017. Owners will receive a second notification by the end of October 2018. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

The front passenger seat occupant detection mat that determines if, and how, the passenger frontal air bag should deploy in a crash may fatigue and develop cracks which could lead to a system failure.
Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger seat occupant detection mat, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters were mailed on November 27, 2017. A second notification letter will be sent when parts are available. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

MY 2007 X3 WAS INVOLVED IN A BIZARRE AND FREAKY SOLO ACCIDENT. MY HOUSE IS ON SLOPED HILL WITH A LEVEL DRIVEWAY. THE ROAD LEADING TO THE DRIVEWAY IS ABOUT 20-25 FEET BELOW THE DRIVEWAY. ON APR. 18, 2013, UPON ENTERING THE DRIVEWAY, THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED, HIT CONCRETE COLUMNS (ON THE EDGE OF THE DRIVEWAY, MEANT FOR RETAINING WALLS) 3 TIMES AND WENT AIRBORNE FROM THE EDGE OF THE DRIVEWAY ONTO THE STREET BELOW. THE CAR HIT THE STREET SURFACE ON ITS ROOF, ROLLED OVER ONCE AND CAME TO A STOP ON ITS 4 TIRES. DRIVER AND FRONT PASSENGER HAD SEATBELTS ON AND RECEIVED MINOR INJURIES. THE REAR PASSENGER WAS EJECTED FROM THE CAR AND SUFFERED MAJOR INJURIES AND STILL REMAINS HOSPITALIZED 18 DAYS AFTER THE ACCIDENT. I HAVE CONTACTED BMW OF NORTH AMERICA AND THEY HAVE ASSURED ME THAT THEY WILL INVESTIGATE THIS ACCIDENT. The contact owns a 2007 BMW X3. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 MPH the vehicle T-bone crashed into the side of a tractor trailer. During the crash the front driver side and passenger side airbags did not deploy. The driver sustained head, neck, back and internal injuries and the front passenger sustained head, neck, back and leg injuries. No further information was available. Both occupants were transported to the hospital. A police report was taken at the scene and the vehicle towed away. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The local dealer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 127,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A SALVAGE YARD WHERE IT WAS DEEMED DESTROYED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THERE WERE TWO INJURIES THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION THE CONTACT'S LEFT HAND WAS CRUSHED AND REQUIRED FOUR SURGERIES. THE CONTACT ENDURED ONE AND A HALF YEARS OF OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY, POST CONCUSSION BRAIN DAMAGE, AND PTSD THERAPY. DUE TO THE CRASH, THE CONTACT NO LONGER HAD PROPER FUNCTIONALITY OF THE LEFT HAND. THE DRIVER OF THE VEHICLE HAD TO GET STITCHES ON THE TOP OF THE HEAD. THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 16V071000 (AIR BAGS). THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. VEHICLE WAS PARKED AT SKI RESORT SINCE ABOUT NOON/12PM. OUTSIDE TEMPURATURE BETWEEN 24F & 35F. STARTED VEHICLE ABOUT 4:20PM. WARMED UP ENGINE TO JUST UNDER NORMAL OPERATING TEMPURATURE. PROCEEDED TO PUT VEHICLE IN GEAR & TURNED ON VEHICLE HEATER TO 91F FULL SPEED (AUTO)CIRCULATE, FOLLOWED BY BOTH DRIVER AND PASSENGER SEAT HEATERS (TO LEVEL 3 OF 3 GREEN LIGHTS ON BUTTON). DROVE 15MPH SPEED LIMIT & AFTER ABOUT 3 MINUTES, LESS THAN 1/4 OF A MILE. SMOKE BEGAN FILLING THE CABIN, MEANWHILE PASSENGER PANICED SCREAMING I'M BURNING, I'M ON FIRE. IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER & TURNED OFF VEHICLE, AIRED OUT VEHICLE BY OPENING DOORS, & INVESTED CAUSE. FOUND BURN ON RIGHT SIDE OF PASSENGER SEAT. PASSENGER RIGHT LEG THIGH WAS BURNED THROUGH SEAT & CLOTHING. VEHICLE HAS 230K ACTUAL OEM MILES.
DUE TO COLD WEATHER, ENGAGED THE DRIVER SIDE SEAT HEATER. NOTICED A SHARP PAIN IN MY LEG AND THEN BEGAN TO SMELL AND SEE SMOKE. FORTUNEATLY, I WAS QUICKLY ABLE TO REALIZE THE SEAT HEATER APPEARED TO HAVE A SHORT IN IT, AND TURNED OFF BEFORE BURNING THROUGH THE LEATHER AND SETTING MY CLOTHS ON FIRE. I WILL BE CONTACTING MY LOCAL BMW DEALERSHIP TO SEE WHAT, IF ANYTHING THEY ARE WILL TO DO. I FEEL THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL BEFORE SOMEONE IS SERIUOSLY HURT OR KILLED. THE ENGINE WAS IDLING WHEN SEAT HEATER WAS ON. I WAS BACKING OUT OF DRIVEWAY AND DRIVING DOWN STREET WHEN I NOTICED. IF I WOULD HAVE HAD SEAT HEATER ON AND THEN STEPPED AWAY FROM VEHICLE AS IT WAS WARMIMG UP, I AM CONFIDENT THE DRIVER SEAT WOULD HAVE CAUGHT ON FIRE OR AT LEAST SEVERLY DAMAGED IT.
DRIVER SIDE HEATED SEAT SWITCH WAS TURNED ON WHILE DRIVING. FEW MINUTES AFTER SWITCH TURNED-ON, BURNING SMELL WAS FELT INSIDE THE CAR. STOPPED THE CAR AND CHECKED THE ENGINE (FIRST GUESS). IT WAS NOT FROM THE ENGINE. SAT ON THE SEAT AND THEN REALIZED THE FUME WAS COMING FROM THE SEAT. THE DRIVER SEAT WAS BURNED, MY PANT BOTTOM WAS BURNED AND MY BUTT WAS ALSO BURNED (NOT SERIOUS). *TR

HEATED SEAT WAS ON "MEDIUM" SETTING, WITHIN ONE MINUTE I NOTICED A BURNING SMELL THEN FELT PAIN IN LEFT LEG. HEATED SEAT ELEMENT BURNED THROUGH SEAT MATERIAL AND BURNED PANTS! NO REAL INJURY BUT SEAT WAS HOT ENOUGH TO BURN THROUGH THE LEATHER AND MY PANTS. SEEMS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER TO HAVE A DIAGNOSTIC PERFORMED BUT WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 68,000.
TURNED ON HEATED SEAT ON DRIVER'S SIDE. AFTER APPROXIMATELY 2 MINUTES, FELT BURNING ON LEFT SIDE OF SEAT. TURNED OFF THE HEATED SEAT, TURNED ON THE LIGHT AND THE SEAT WAS SMOKING SUBSTANTIALLY. A SMALL HOLE WAS BURNED THROUGH THE LEATHER SEAT (ABOUT THE SIZE OF A DIME) AND THROUGH MY PANTS. I HAVE A SMALL RED MARK ON THE TOP OF THE BACK OF MY LEG. THE VEHICLE SMELLS LIKE SMOKE. LUCKILY, I WAS IN THE DRIVEWAY WHEN THIS HAPPENED OR AN ACCIDENT MIGHT HAVE OCCURRED. VERY CONCERNING AND WILL LIKELY BE A COSTLY REPAIR. HAVE NOTED SEVERAL OTHER SIMILAR INCIDENTS REPOTED ON-LINE. *TR
POWER STEERING PULLEY COMES INTO CONTACT OF AXLE CARRIER, IT'S A CLEAR DESIGN FLAW AND THIS CAR HASN'T HAD MUCH RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT DONE, THE COMPANY KNOWINGLY PUT AN UNSAFE BETA CAR ON THE MARKET. MY BELT BROKE BECAUSE OF THE PULLEY TO FRAME CONTACT AND STALLED ON THE 405 FREEWAY AND ENDED UP GETTING INJURED WHEN THE CAR WAS REAR ENDED AT 60MPH. THERE IS A SERVICE BULLETIN WITHIN BMW'S SYSTEM DESCRIBING THIS ISSUE AND THEY WANT CONSUMERS TO PAY OUT OF POCKET FOR REPAIRS. I SPOKE TO CORPORATE AND THEY HAVE GIVEN ME THE COLD SHOULDER SO FAR. MY MISSION IS TO GET THIS ESCALATED TO A RECALL BEFORE SOMEONE GETS SERIOUSLY HURT.
I'VE OWNED A 2000 AND 2007 BMW 3 SERIES AND A 2010 X6 ALL WITH AIRBAG RECALLS BUT I DON'T OWN ANY OF THESE VEHICLES ANYMORE. IT WAS A HUMID SUMMER (JULY) MORNING BMW FAULT COULD HAVE KILLED MANY, A VERY DANGEROUS PUBLIC SAFETY HAZARD. I WAS STRANDED FOR HOURS UNABLE TO DRIVE BMW. *ADDING INSULT TO INJURY THE HIGH HUMIDITY COULD HAVE SET-OFF THE AIRBAG FAULT UNRESOLVED BY BMW 18 MONTHS & COUNTING.
