On June 20, 2026, while the 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport was being driven on Richardson Highway near Mile 155 in Alaska, smoke and flames developed from the engine compartment without any collision. The driver stopped and both occupants exited before the vehicle became fully engulfed. The fire created an immediate risk of serious injury or death and blocked the northbound lane. There were no known prior drivability problems, warning lamps, or other symptoms before the incident. The exact failed component is UNKNOWN. Potential areas requiring investigation include the engine, electrical system, ABS/HECU brake module, multi-fuse, fuel system, and other engine-compartment components. Alaska Department of Public Safety responded. Its report states that there was no obvious cause, but that the fire appeared to have originated in the engine compartment. The vehicle was towed and preserved for the manufacturer. Hyundai inspected the vehicle and confirmed that the inspection was completed on July 11, 2026. Hyundai later stated orally that it did not find an engine defect, but it has not provided the complete inspection report, testing methods, photographs, technical findings, or a written origin-and-cause determination. Hyundai has not explained whether the ABS/HECU, electrical system, multi-fuse, fuel system, or other potential fire sources were separately examined. The vehicle sustained catastrophic damage and was a total loss. Both occupants escaped, but experienced severe ongoing psychological distress after the fire. I request that NHTSA evaluate whether the fire involved an engine, electrical, ABS/HECU, fuel-system, recall-remedy, or other safety defect. The vehicle was available for Hyundai's inspection. Its current availability for further inspection is UNKNOWN. The vehicle remains preserved and is currently available for further inspection upon request.

While driving west across [XXX] , towing a 5x8 enclosed trailer, there was a smell of burnt rubber and I pulled over to inspect for a busted tire. At no time were there indicator lights on the dash. Upon bringing the vehicle to a stop on the side of the road the cabin began to fill with smoke. I popped the hood of the car with the intention of looking to see what was occurring. Exiting the vehicle and coming around to the front there were already flames coming out from under the hood. Within 10 minutes the car and trailer were engulfed in flames and have been deemed total losses by insurance. I had the vehicle serviced two days prior in Columbus Ohio and was cleared for the 4 day journey. I had the brakes done in 4 months prior in [XXX] . Had no issues getting to Columbus, no problems driving to Kansas City. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
What happened: While driving in Montana on September 21, 2025, the cabin suddenly filled with gasoline fumes and the accelerator pedal stopped responding. After pulling over, flames erupted from under the hood and the vehicle was completely destroyed within minutes. The passenger-side door could not be opened from the inside at first, delaying escape and creating a serious safety risk. No warning lights or messages appeared before or during the fire. (1) While driving, gasoline suddenly filled the cabin and the accelerator pedal stopped responding. Within seconds, the vehicle caught fire. The cause appears related to the fuel system, and possibly the ABS module. The vehicle was completely destroyed but remains available for inspection in a private tow lot. (2) The fire spread extremely quickly. Both occupants were nearly trapped inside when the passenger-side door would not open from the inside, delaying escape. The vehicle burned on the shoulder of a busy highway in Montana, posing danger to us and to surrounding motorists. (3) Not after this fire, but a similar problem occurred in 2023 when gasoline filled the cabin and caused the engine to stall. At that time, Hyundai replaced the engine under warranty. (4) No. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance. It is secured in a private tow lot and is available for inspection. (5) No. There were no warnings at all before or during the failure. Even as gasoline filled the cabin and the vehicle caught fire, the check engine light stayed off and no alerts appeared. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Parts of the ABS system under the hood burned, while the vehicle was parked in my garage, affecting electrical and other parts. I found information online about a recall for this same problem. I have never received a notification of this recall before. I went that same day [XXX] to my local dealer. They gave me an appointment for service for the next day and left the vehicle with them on 04/03/2025. I called the dealer after one week and they told me they already verified the vehicle and notified Hyundai company and are waiting for them to approve the repair. I called the dealer again today 04/23/2025, after 3 weeks and the they told me they are “still waiting for Hyundai Company to approve the repair. That they don’t know how much time this may take and that it may take a lot more time”. In the meantime, and after the bad and risky experience, I have one car less in my house. I understand this is a process but also, considering that this was caused by a factory defect I understand they should be responsible and solve the problem in a timely manner. Thank you. The engine was replaced under a recall related to an engine knock code. About two weeks later, the vehicle lost all power while driving. The dealership confirmed a failure in the high-pressure fuel line and that the turbo had failed at the same time. The same visit revealed oil leaks, and shortly after, the vehicle began emitting white and black smoke. Their technician stated the failures were due to “consequential damage from engine failure.” The problems have continued to return, and I’ve been told the vehicle is unsafe to drive. Hyundai is now refusing to fully cover the cost of repair, offering only 15% off, despite all of the damage being directly linked to the replacement engine. I transport children in this vehicle. My safety and theirs have been at risk multiple times because of these unresolved and ongoing failures.

ABOUT 20 MINUTES AFTER PARKING MY VEHICLE AT AN OFFICE LOCATION, IT CAUGHT ON FIRE. I COULD SEE THE FIRE BY THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL, BETWEEN THE TIRE AND THE BODY; SMOKE WAS COMING FROM ALL AROUND THE HOOD. WE PUT OUT THE FIRE WITH A FIRE EXTINGUISHER. WE COULD SEE DAMAGED WIRES. I HAD NOTICED WARNING LIGHTS ON MY DISPLAY PANEL WHEN I GOT INTO MY VEHICLE TO START DRIVING. I CALLED CLAY COOLEY HYUNDAI OF ROCKWALL AND INFORMED THEM OF THE MESSAGES: BEEPING FOLLOWED BY FLASHING MESSAGES ABOUT ABS, ESC, & DOWNHILL BRAKE CONTROL; PLUS DOWN BELOW WERE TWO RED CIRCLES (EXCLAMATION MARK IN ONE AND THE LETTER P IN THE OTHER) AND THE WORD BRAKE BELOW. I ASKED HYUNDAI IF THE CAR WAS SAFE TO DRIVE AND THEY SAID YES. I PROCEEDED TO MY 12 NOON APPOINTMENT IN RICHARDSON, TX. ABOUT 20 MINS AFTER PARKING THE CAR, THE FIRE WAS NOTICED BY AN EMPLOYEE. THE DAY BEFORE THIS, ON TUE, 01-29-2019, I HAD NOTICED 3 AMBER WARNING LIGHTS (ABS, ESC & DBC). I CALLED HYUNDAI, INFORMED THEM OF THIS AND MADE AN APPOINTMENT FOR THUR JAN 31, 2019 AT 9:30 A.M.

2014 HYUNDAI SANTA FE SPORT- BRAKE LIGHT/ ABS LIGHT/ HILL DESCENT CONTROL LIGHT CAME ON IN VEHICLE AND AFTER A DAY OR TWO NEVER TURNED OFF. TOOK CAR TO DEALERSHIP AND WAS ASKED TO MAKE APPOINTMENT. THE NEXT DAY A TRIANGLE WITH EXCLAMATION POINT LIGHT TURNED ON ALONG WITH A STEERING WHEEL WITH EXCLAMATION POINT LIGHT AND THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME LOOSE AT THIS TIME. DROVE MYSELF HOME AND AFTER PARKING I TURNED VEHICLE OFF BUT THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO MAKE HUMMING NOISES LIKE SOMETHING WAS STILL RUNNING. RESTARTED CAR AND THEN TURNED OFF ENGINE AGAIN AND THE NOISE STOPPED. I WENT INSIDE MY HOUSE AND LESS THAN 5 MINUTES LATER THERE WAS A LOUD BANGING ON MY FRONT DOOR- A NEIGHBOR THAT RAN UP TO INFORM ME MY CAR WAS ON FIRE. I COMPLETED REGULAR MAINTENANCE ON THIS VEHICLE AND IT ONLY HAD 35,000 MILES. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS SITUATION SO THAT NO OTHERS GO THROUGH THIS DEVASTATING SITUATION THAT I FACED TODAY.

HYUNDAI REPLACED ENGINE CLAIMING IT WAS A NEW ENGINE EVEN THOUGH IT WAS ACTUALLY A REFURBISHED ENGINE. THIS ENGINE WAS PUT IN BECAUSE THE ORIGINAL ENGINE FROM MY 2014 HYUNDAI SANATE FE SPORT 2.0T HAS SEIZED AND COMPLETELY LOCKED UP WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. A COUPLE THOUSAND MILES AFTER THIS 'REFURBISHED' ENGINE HAD BEEN OUT IN AFTER DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY I STARTED TO HEAR SOME RATTLING FOLLOWED BY A LOUD POP (SOUNDED LIKE A SMALL BOMB GOING OFF), I LOOK OUT MY REAR VIEW WINDOW BECAUSE SOMETHING HAD CUT MY EYE AND I PROCEED TO SEE SMOKE COMING OUT THE REAR VIEW WINDOW. I OBVIOUSLY NEED TO PULL OFF THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY, SO I GO TO GIVE THE CAR SOME GAS TO MERGE OVER A COUPLE OF LANES TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE AND THE SAME THING HAPPENS AS BEFORE WHEN THEY PUT THE 'REFURBISHED' ENGINE IN (CAR ENGINE LOCKS UP AND I HAVE NO POWER SO I HAVE TO GLIDE ON OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY). ONCE I DO THAT, I CALL THE SERVICE ADVISOR AT HYUNDAI OF FLORENCE (WHERE THE 'REFURBISHED' ENGINE WAS PUT IN) AND MENTION TO HIM I'M STUCK ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AGAIN. AS I CO TO HE SPEAKING TO HIM I NOTICE THE HOOD OF MY CAR IS STARTING TO MELT. I QUICKLY GET OUT AND START TAKING PICTURES/VIDEOS (FOR PROOF TO SHOW HYUNDAI/INSURANCE) AND WITHIN A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME, MY CAR IS COMPLETELY ENGULFED IN FLAMES!

I PURCHASED USED 2014 HYUNDAI SANTA FE SPORT ON 8/31/2016 WITH CASH. IN FEBRUARY 2018 WHILE DRIVING IN HIGH SPEED LANE ACCELERATING TO PASS THE RPMS WENT RED AND LOUD BANG, WITH SMOKE FILLING CABIN THROUGH VENTS. I WAS ABLE TO CROSS 3 LANES OF TRAFFIC RUN AWAY FROM CAR CALLED HYUNDAI 24HR TOWING. THEY QUICKLY PICKED ME UP AND CAR GAVE ME KEYS TO LOANER NO QUESTIONS ASKED, THEN IN1 WEEK THEY GAVE CAR BACK WITH BRAND NEW 2017 ENGINE. I WAS THRILLED. THEN ON JULY 10 DRIVING UP HILL SAW SMOKE IN REAR VIEW MIRROR GOING ABOUT 35 MPH. I WENT TO PULL OVER AND HEAD HOME BUT BRAKES WENT TO FLOOR AND POWER STEERING WAS SHOT. I WHIPPED IT INTO PARK AND LOOKED UP TO ENTIRE WINDSHIELD BLOCKED WITH BLACK SMOKE AND ORANGE FLAMES. I GRABBED MY PURSE AND COULDN'T GET OUT BECAUSE I HAD FORGOTTEN ABOUT SEATBELT. UNDID THAT GRABBED PHONE AND SPRINTED FOR MY LIFE AS THERE WERE NUMEROUS EXPLOSIONS. VEHICLE BURNED TO FRAME. IT WAS STILL UNDER BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY BUT THE BUMPERS WERE GONE! THANKS BE TO GOD THAT MY HANDICAPPED HUSBAND HAD DECLINED TO COME WITH ME. I HAD A RENTAL FROM INSURANCE AT NO COST, HYUNDAI WANTS ALL PAPERWORK ON CAR WHICH BURNED WITH IT.

AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE 15 MILES ON THE HIGHWAY, WE DROVE ON RESIDENTIAL STREET FOR ABOUT 1.5 MILES. AS I WAS TURNING INTO A PARKING STRUCTURE THE ENGINE STOPPED AND THE VEHICLE LOST POWER. I GLIDED THE VEHICLE TO A RED ZONE NO PARKING AREA ON THE STREET AND STOPPED THE VEHICLE. BLACK SMOKE QUICKLY APPEARED FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND FLAMES QUICKLY APPEARED. THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE SOON BECAME ENGULFED IN FLAMES SHOOTING 4-6 FEET HIGH. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED AND SPRAYED THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE WITH A FOAM FIRE RETARDANT. THEN THEY CUT THE HOOD LATCH AND OPEN THE HOOD. THE ENTIRE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, WINDSHIELD AND THE FRONT PASSENGER AREA WERE COMPLETELY DESTROYED. THE VEHICLE WAS MELTED TO THE STREET AND THE TOW DRIVER HAD TO SMASH IT LOOSE.

I OWNED A 2014 SANTA FE SPORT. IT WAS BLOWING BLACK SMOKE OUT OF THE EXHAUST. I WOULD BRING IT IN FOR AN OIL CHANGE AND THEY WOULD TELL ME THE OIL WAS BONE DRY. THEY COULD NOT SEE WHERE THE OIL LEAK WAS, I HAD NO SPOTS IN MY DRIVEWAY. THE LOW OIL LIGHT NEVER CAME ON. THE TIME BETWEEN OIL CHANGE AND NO OIL LEFT WAS ABOUT 3 WEEKS. I BROUGHT IT IN, THEY TOLD ME I HAD AN OIL CLOG AND NEEDED A NEW MOTOR. I FILLED IT WITH OIL AND DROVE IT HOME. THE NEXT DAY I WAS DRIVING IT TO MY MECHANIC, STOPPED AT A CONVIENANCE STORE ON THE WAY. SHUT OFF THE MOTOR, WHILE IN LINE, SOMEONE YELLED, "YOUR CAR IS ON FIRE" I LOOKED OUT IT WAS FULLY INGOLFED FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE UNDER THE HOOD. A COMPLETE LOSS, AND HYUNDAI WOULD NOT STAND BEHIND IT. 3 MONTHS LATER, GOT A "RECALL NOTICE" SAID "ENGINE" THE HYUNDAI HAD 42 THOUSAND MILES. EVERY WHERE I LOOK FOR A RECALL NOTICE ON THIS VEHICLE CAN'T SEEM TO FIND THE ONE I AM REFERENCING EXCEPT ON THIS SITE. AFTER 17 ENGINE COMPLAINTS, WHY ARE THERE NO INVESTIGATIONS, OR CLASS ACTION SUITS? OH AND THE "BLUE LINK" MONTHLY REPORTS NEVER REPORTED ANYTHING WRONG. EVEN AFTER THE FIRE, THE REPORT REPORTED THAT ALL SYSTEMS WERE GOOD EVEN MY TIRE PRESSURE. FUNNY, BECAUSE I WATCHED THOSE BLOW UP!
