2000 DISCOVERY II PURCHASED OFF THE SHOW ROOM FLOOR FROM MAIN LINE LAND ROVER IN HAVERFORD PA IN APRIL 00. JUNE 25, 2000 I WAS TRAVELING 60 MPH ON THE NJ TURNPIKE WHEN THE VEHICLE WENT OUT OF CONTROL , SHOOTING OFF TO THE RIGHT SIDEWAYS WITHOUT STEERING CONTROL. VEHICLE TURNED 180 DEGREES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY AND WAS STOPPED BY THE STEEL GUARD RAIL. THE VEHICLE WAS, AT THAT POINT, FACING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION OF THE TRAFFIC. THE VEHICLE WAS KEPT BY THE BODY SHOP AND THE DEALER (BOTH IN CHERRY HILL, NJ) FOR NEARLY 4 MONTHS. THE BODY SHOP COULD NOT GET THE VEHICLE TO DRIVE STRAIGHT. THE DEALER EVENTUALLY REPLACED THE STEERING BOX. AT THE NEXT SERVICING, MAIN LINE LAND ROVER REPLACED THE RECALLED PULLEY AND BELTS. I AHVE ALSO HAD CONTINUING PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION. IT ALWAYS SEEMS TO DRAG. I HAVE RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER 3 TIMES FOR CONTINUED PROBLEMS WITH THE STEERING AND THE TRANSMISSION. THEY CONTINUALLY CLAIM THE VEHICLE IS OK.*AK
WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE STALLED. CONSUMER TRIED TO RESTART VEHICLE, BUT WAS UNABLE TO DO SO. TEMPERATURE LIGHT APPEARED ON THE DASHBOARD AND REMAINED ON. CONSUMER HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION, AND MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO OVERHEATING. A SECOND INCIDENT OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING WHEN ANOTHER VEHICLE IN FRONT HAD A LARGE BOX DISCHARGED FROM THE TRUCK ONTO THE GROUND. CONSUMER APPLIED THE BRAKES AND PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. CONSUMER LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO FLIP OVER SEVERAL TIMES. UPON IMPACT, BOTH AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. DRIVER SUSTAINED NECK AND BACK INJURIES, AND WAS TRANSPORTED BY HELICOPTER TO THE HOSPITAL. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. *AK A RECALL WAS ISSUED FOR ABS MODULATOR PRESSURE REDUCTION VALVE COVERS (AFFECTED VEHICLES: 1999-2005 DISCOVERY SERIES II). *NM
MY VEHICLE WAS PARKED WITH THE ENGINE OFF AND THE IGNITION SET IN THE FULL "OFF" POSITION. MY WIFE AND I WERE IN THE VEHICLE PREPARING TO DEPART. THE CONTROL CONSOLE BETWEEN THE FRONT SEATS BEGAN TO EMIT SMOKE AND A BURNING SMELL IN THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. WITHIN 30 SECONDS, THE CONSOLE CAUGHT FIRE AND EMITTED A NOXIOUS CLOUD OF SMOKE IN THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. MY WIFE AND I EVACUATED THE VEHICLE, AND I OBTAINED A FIRE EXTINGUISHER FROM A NEARBY BUSINESS AND EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. I SUSPECTED THAT AN ELECTRICAL SHORT CAUSED THE FIRE, AND I DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY. THE ENTIRE INCIDENT OCCURED WHILE THE ENGINE WAS OFF AND THE IGNITION SET IN THE FULL "OFF" POSITION. I BELIEVE THAT THE ELECTRICAL FIRE IN MY VEHICLE WAS CAUSED BY A MANUFACTURING DEFECT AND/OR DESIGN DEFECT. GIVEN THE SPEED AND THE LOCATION OF THE FIRE THAT IT CAUSED, THE MANUFACTURING AND/OR DESIGN DEFECT IN THIS VEHICLE PRESENTS A SUBSTANTIAL RISK OF DEATH OR SERIOUS HARM TO DRIVERS AND PASSENGERS. IN THE INTERESTS OF PUBLIC SAFETY, THIS PROBLEM SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED AND REDRESSED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.*AK
CONSUMER WAS TRAVELING ABOUT 20MPH ON A SIDE STREET, AND TRANSMISSION LIGHT CAME ON DASBOARD. SO HE IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER TO THE SHOULDERS. PASSENGER NOTICED THAT VEHICLE WAS ON FIRE. CONSUMER DOESN'T KNOW WERE THE FIRE STARTED, AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES. *AK
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY. THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED AND THE HAND BRAKE WAS APPLIED. THE VEHICLE AUTOMATICALLY SHIFTED INTO GEAR AND CRASHED INTO A TREE. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALER, BUT THEY ARE UNSURE AS TO WHAT CAUSED THE FAILURE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 39,000.
WHILE VEHICLE WAS PARKED VEHICLE WENT BACKWARDS, CROSSING STREET AND RUNNING INTO A PARKED CAR. AUTOMATIC INTERLOCK SYSTEM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *AK
THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THAT THE ABS AND BRAKES HAVE FAILED WHILE TRYING TO STOP. DEALER HAS MADE 3 ATTEMPTS TO FIND/FIX PROBLEM
WHILE ATTEMPTING TO STOP VEHICLE WITH FOOT ON BRAKE PEDAL, VEHICLE WOULD NOT STOP. INSTEAD, IT SLAMMED INTO THE GARAGE DOOR. THE ONLY WAY VEHICLE TO STOP VEHICLE WAS TO TURN IGNITION OFF. CONSUMER FELT VEHICLE WAS VERY UNSAFE. *AK
I CAME TO A STOP IN A PARKING LOT AND TRIED TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK. NEXT THING I KNOW, I GOING FULL THROTTLE, OUT OF CONTROL IN REVERSE. *AK
BRAKE FAILURE. WHILE DRIVING ON A CITY STREET, BRAKES FAILED TO STOP VEHICLE, BRAKE WARNING ILLUMINATED AFTER PRESSING BRAKE PEDAL. EMERGENCY BRAKE APPLIED AND DOWNSHIFT TO SLOW AND STOP. REPAIR SHOP STATED "BRAKE PIPES ATTACHED TO FRAME HAD RUSTED EXCESSIVELY ALONG WITH FRAME, A VERY COMMON ISSUE". WHILE SEARCHING INTERNET I EASILY FOUND HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS INVOLVING RUSTED BRAKE LINES/PIPES AND LAND ROVER (LR) DISCOVERY FRAMES. UPON FURTHER SEARCH I NOTED TOYOTA TACOMA FRAME RUST ISSUES RESULTED IN A SAFETY RECALL. MY LR TECH SAID THE FRAME DEGRADATION DUE TO EXCESSIVE RUST ON THE DISCOVERY MODEL IS A SAFETY CONCERN! I'M A CERTIFIED OSHA AVIATION SAFETY INSPECTOR AND AM QUITE CONCERNED OVER THE PUBLIC SAFETY WITH THIS KNOWN EXCESSIVE CORROSION PROBLEM WITH LR DISCOVERY BRAKE LINES(PIPES) AND FRAMES. *TR
DRIVER SEAT BELT ASSEMBLY INSIDE DOOR PANEL FAILED. DOES NOT RETRACT OR PULL OUT FOR USE - RENDERING IT USELESS AND UNSAFE. *TR
CRUISE CONTROL ACCELERATION CABLE FAILED, THUS MOTOR WAS STUCK IN FULL THROTTLE. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY. HE STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 10MPH WHEN THE ABS ,TRACTION AND HILL LIGHT CAME ON HE FELT SLIPPAGE ON THE FRONT RIGHT TIRE WHENEVER HE ENGAGED THE BRAKES. THE DEALER STATED THAT HE NEEDED A NEW RIGHT HAND WHEEL SPEED SENSOR AND AN ECU ON THE VEHICLE. RECALL NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 02V022000 COMPONENT: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK IS RELATED TO THE FAILURE; HOWEVER, THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE VEHICLE WILL BE REPAIRED AT THE OWNERS EXPENSE FOR $1,200.00. FOR ONE WEEK THE DEALER HAS BEEN REPAIRING THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 101,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY. WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH UP AN ON RAMP, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BECAME STUCK TO THE FLOOR. AS A RESULT, THE SPEED INCREASED TO 120 MPH. THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE FOR APPROXIMATELY FIVE MINUTES. SHE EXPERIENCED SEVERAL UNRELATED ISSUES WITH THE VEHICLE PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT. THE ABS WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED AND REMAIN LIT UNTIL THE VEHICLE IS SERVICED. AFTER THE REPAIR, THE LIGHT WOULD ILLUMINATE AGAIN. LAND ROVER COMMENDED THE CONTACT FOR DEALING WITH THE SITUATION, BUT HAVE NOT OFFERED TO ASSIST. LAND ROVER STATED THAT THEY WOULD CONSIDER ASSISTING ACCORDING TO THE LEMON LAW, BUT HAVE NOT GOTTEN BACK TO THE CONTACT. THE DEALER REPLACED THE MISSING PART, PROVIDED A LOANER VEHICLE, AND GAVE THE CONTACT A LIST OF DEFECTS WITH THE VEHICLE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 90,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY. WHILE DRIVING 20 MPH, THE VOLUME ON THE RADIO INCREASED VERY LOUDLY ON ITS OWN. THE CONTACT HAD TO PULL OFF THE HIGHWAY TO TRY AND DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE. HE CALLED THE MANUFACTURER IN AN ATTEMPT TO FIND THE NEAREST DEALER AND WAS INFORMED THAT ONE WAS 150 MILES AWAY. THE FAILURE HAS NOT BEEN RESOLVED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 87,000.

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS NO. 114, "THEFT PROTECTION." WATER CONTAMINATION OF THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION OIL CAN LEAD TO VARIOUS FAILURE MODES OF THE TRANSMISSION. ONE OF THESE FAILURE MODELS RESULTS IN INCORRECT OPERATION OF THE PARK LOCK FUNCTION THAT COULD ALLOW A VEHICLE TO ROLL AWAY IF PARKED WITHOUT THE HANDBRAKE PROPERLY SET.
Solution : DEALERS WILL CHECK THE PARK LOCK FUNCTION; REPOSITION THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION BREATHER TUBE; AND TEST THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FLUSH IF NECESSARY.
