The car proceeds by itself and does not stop even when brakes are engaged. This happened 2 times. Once in reverse and once forward, both caused severe damages to the car. In the forward incident, the driver was wearing seat belt but air bags deployed with impact.
OnXXX, as we approached what I call the 6 o’clock position of a round-about in [XXX], we had braked almost to a full stop (0-5 mph) to wait on the car ahead of us to enter the round-about when we felt increasing movement. Despite braking, to wait on that car, our car with increasing speed started shoving that car into the circle. Fortunately, he was able to drive away from us, but that car had been damaged on the back and right side. With that obstacle out of the way, our car rapidly and exponentially increased speed - all while we were fully braking. Two witnesses said they saw our brake lights as we sped along. We hit the curb as we approached the 12 o’clock exit, and that turned us so that we crossed both lanes of the road and headed towards the far sidewalk and storefronts. When we hit that curb it pushed us diagonally to face the street again. Hard to estimate but we must have been doing 50 mph when we hit a very large brick planter and we finally were wedged to a stop when we slammed in between two vehicles parked parallel to the sidewalk. The motor ran for a few seconds after we stopped, and finally quit on its own. We KNOW the brake was applied the whole time; there were no visual or audible alarms from the car as we entered “UNINTENDED ACCELERATION”. Despite the incredibly strong impact (our car has been deemed totaled) the front air bags did not deploy. Only the driver’s side curtain deployed. The bumper of the parked transport van on our front left was damaged, and the small SUV on our front right was deemed totaled. No people were in those two parked cars; the first car was hit at the initial slower speed so those people were not injured. By some grace, no pedestrians were in our path or they would surely have been killed. The driver of our car (my husband) was miraculously not injured, but CT scans and x-rays showed I had several contusions and a fractured tibia that will require surgery due to brake, propulsion, no air bags. Dealer claim the don’t know is the problem. Dealer has had car for approximately 65 days Bottom line, the car is totally unsafe to drive and very dangerous
We are reporting a suspected thermal runaway incident involving our recently purchased used 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 and have significant concerns regarding the vehicle's safety. **Vehicle Information** * Purchased XXX, 36,662 miles * Clean inspection and no accidents per Carfax **Incident Timeline – XXX** Between 6:00 and 6:30 PM, while traveling northbound on [XXX] just past the [XXX] exit in [XXX], the vehicle struck a white piece of road debris that appeared flat, similar to Styrofoam (video available). There was no immediate loss of vehicle function. [XXX] The vehicle was then moved to the driveway for inspection after a low coolant warning appeared. Damage to the underside near the driver's side and observed blue coolant leaking from the area. The coolant reservoir under the hood was empty. Based on online guidance advising against driving a vehicle with a coolant leak, we decided to leave the vehicle parked in our garage overnight and arrange a flatbed tow to a Hyundai dealership the following day. The garage door was closed, and the vehicle was **not charging**. At approximately 8:10 PM, a burning smell was detected inside the home. Upon opening the door between the house and garage, smoke was observed. The family immediately evacuated, and XXX was called at 8:12 PM. The fire department arrived at approximately 8:18 PM and found the garage filled with smoke. At 8:30 PM, firefighters removed the vehicle from the garage. At 8:35 PM, flames were observed beneath the vehicle. Firefighters applied water directly to the fire until 11:00 PM, after which the vehicle was removed. [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] Manufacturer was contacted; denies any liability due to debris. However, we believe inadequate safety design contributed, including soft protection shield and poor location of coolant. During level 2 AC charging the circuit breaker in the house tripped. Tried again on a level 1 charger that came with the car and again it tripped the home circuit. Again, the car overloaded the house electricla system to a point it tripped the circuit breaker. Car taken to dealership for repairs. Dealership trouble shooting identifed failed ICCU with burnt connecter pins. HyundaiCase Management number 42152269 THIS IS A FIRE HAZARD FOR THE CAR AND HOUSE.
Charging port burned during DC fast charging session, resulting in melted charging pin. Unable to insert CCS connecter due to melted pin obstructing insertion. Further damage to electrical systems unknown. No warning signs shown aside from vehicle charging session ending. Lack of safety systems to prevent melting/burning of charging pins leaves potential for general vehicle fire, battery fire, etc. Dealer has had car in possession for over 10 days with no update. Corporate contact has been unresponsive.
On XXXXX, while parked at a campsite approximately two hours from my home, the vehicle displayed an “electrical failure” warning on the dashboard. The vehicle had been parked for less than 20 minutes when this issue occurred. I contacted Hyundai customer support that same evening to report the problem (Case #XXXXXX). On April 4, 2026, the vehicle was towed via Hyundai roadside assistance to Winner Hyundai in Dover, Delaware, where Tracy is my current point of contact. This situation left my family of four, along with our belongings and pet, stranded without transportation. Despite significant effort, we were unable to secure a rental vehicle in the Dewey Beach area, even after contacting multiple rental agencies and the dealership directly. This was later resolved, and I am currently in a rental through Enterprise; however, the stress and uncertainty of potentially being stranded was significant and unacceptable. While at the dealership, my wife witnessed the tow operator unloading the vehicle without proper equipment to safely lower it. As a result, the vehicle’s hitch made forceful contact with the pavement and became lodged. Multiple dealership employees observed the incident. After considerable effort to free the vehicle, it was released abruptly and rolled into another vehicle on the lot, causing additional damage. An argument then occurred between the dealership owner and the tow operator, which my wife was forced to witness. The rear video camera fails intermittently. It works sometimes and doesn't at times. The same with the rear cross traffic warning and pedestrian warning. I've taken my car to the dealer service center but they claim to not being able to reproduce the issue. I know the issue still exists since my husband hit a parked car while backing out of a driveway since there was no alert provided and the rear camera did not work.
Incident occurred when head-in parking in a space pointed into an stores exterior wall. There were no parking/wheel stops, just pavement then wall. No adjacent cars. I was decelerating with foot completely off accelerator and over the brake pedal. The car is an EV and was in 3rd level of regenerative braking, slowing down quickly. As I completed the turn into the space and began straitening the wheel, the car suddenly and rapidly accelerated and crashed into the wall. The only likely explanation I have is that I inadvertently pressed the Driving Assist button with my right thumb or hand while turning the steering wheel, which would have activated Smart Cruise Control, and, if the necessary conditions were met, set the minimum speed to 30 km/hr. The car manual states: "If your vehicle speed is between 0 - 20 mph (0 - 30 km/h) when you press the Driving Assist ( ) button, the Smart Cruise Control speed will be set to 20 mph (30km/h)." The Foward Collision-Avoidance Assist was set to Active Assist, which should have applied the brake to stop from colliding with the wall, but instead the car accelerated. (Note, the parking assist feature does not usually recognize head-in parking.) The car has two Driving Assist settings: Based on Drive Mode and Based on Driving Style. If the latter is selected, three additional features are set on sliding scales: Distance (close to far), Acceleration (slow to fast), Response Speed (slow to quick). These three settings are adjusted automatically based on the car's interpretation of the driver's driving style, or they can be manually overriden. I have never changed these settings. Post-incident I checked the setting and it was set to Based on Driving Style with Acceleration=Fast. Concerns: Is Driving Assist to easy to inadvertently activate? Should Driving Assist not activate at very slow speeds and not auto-set to 30k/h? Why did Forward Collision-Avoidance not activate? Drive Assist should not default to Based on Driving Style.
When parking in a supermarket parking lot I slowly approached the space while braking. As I turned left into the space and released the brake pedal to allow the car to slowly roll into the space as I always do, the car surged as if someone floored the accelerator. I veered left to avoid a head on collision with the parked car facing me and went diagonally between the right front fender of that car and the left front fender of the car parked in the space to my left. I sideswiped both sides of my car and damaged the front fenders of both cars before I was able to apply the brake and bring the car to a stop. There was a mother with her two young children loading groceries into the car in front of me. Fortunately I avoided hitting anyone, but the witnessed the accident. I was in shock. My car suffered $25 in damages. There is absolutely no way I accidentally applied the accelerator, and if I had I would never have floored it! The car malfunctioned. I reported this incident to Hyundai also. They supposedly were sending someone to inspect the car at the auto body repair center.
12/30/2023 at approximately 5:30pm I drove home with the iPedal engaged. The iPedal was installed as a download to the car in August 2023. My daughter was in the passenger seat. I began to back into my driveway but shifted to Drive to straighten out the car. The car began to roll forward I took my foot off the accelerator but the car did not stop in spite of the iPedal being engaged. I put my foot on the BRAKE PEDAL which went all the way to the floor to no avail. The car rolled slowly into an electrical pole which brought the car to a stop. I previously filed a complaint here but I have since learned that iPedal may disengage if the car is put into reverse. There is not warning light to alert the driver that iPedal is disengaged so the driver is not aware that the brakes may not work as expected. I believe this may have been the case with my accident. However, this does not address why using the foot pedal for the brakes did not stop the car. Have found many complaints about this on various forums and believe this aspect of iPedal needs to be addressed. It should not disengage unless the driver instructs the car to do so. I have not been able to find documentation of this functionality in the manual, but I have searched and will continue to do so.
Driver was moving forward into a space in a parking garage between two other vehicles. Driver had pulled most of the way in and was slowly inching forward. As the car came to a stop, it suddenly lurched forward, hitting a concrete wall. The collision warning system did not alert, and auto-braking did not occur. The car was in Regen Level 3, and Auto Hold was not activated. In the months prior to this, the car twice had a similar situation when coming to a stop at an intersection with foot on the brake, then suddenly lurched forward, nearly rear-ending a car in front. There was no visible damage to the concrete wall, and a police report was not made. Hyundai says they want to inspect vehicle, but have not done so after a month. It is easy to believe that this was driver error, but it absolutely was not. Car lunged forward and accelerated into a wall with only the brake being applied. All of these events have occurred after the Hyundai Ioniq 5 software update was applied on 26 Sep 2023.
12/30/2023 at approximately 5:30pm I drove home with the iPedal engaged. The iPedal was installed as a download to the car in August 2023. My daughter was in the passenger seat. I began to back into my driveway but shifted to Drive to straighten out the car. The car began to roll forward I took my foot off the accelerator but the car did not stop in spite of the iPedal being engaged. I put my foot on the BRAKE PEDAL which went all the way to the floor to no avail. The car rolled slowly into an electrical pole which brought the car to a stop. Neither iPedal nor the foot brake pedal had any effect on the car. I then put the car in reverse and backed the car into my driveway and the brakes worked as expected. When I then attempted to charge the vehicle, the charging port would not open. I could hear the motor working to open but it would not open. On 1/11/2024, I again attempted to open the charging port and this time it did open. So, TWO different electrical (including the brakes and the charging port) were not working properly. Inasmuch as the charging port again worked and the brakes again worked, there clearly was a malfunction that was random and unpredictable and also nearly impossible to reproduce but if this happened once, it could happen again. The brakes failed. Had we been traveling on a busy road, or at the top of a hill, we would have faced significant bodily harm, death to ourselves or others. This car had been driven locally, predominantly on local roads. The car is available for inspection and has only been driven on the dealer lot since the the incident. There were no warning lights or messages to indicate that any issues existed. The manufacturer has executed an inspected but has not reproduced the problem. The manufacturer and dealership claims the car is safe to drive without addressing the brake failure. I do not believe the car is safe to drive without a determination of how the bake failure happened or without a repair to that issue.
Intermittent Electrical / Brake failure . Put vehicle in reverse . Brakes failed to stop vehicle . Vehicle has had electrical issues before . Waring lights came on for steering and tire pressure in the past . Recall then came from Hyundai for the ICCU .45 minutes before the collision, the front collision warning came on when I was stopped at an intersection with no one in front of me . I stopped the vehicle and turned the vehicle off . Turned on the vehicle and it reset the warning lights and sounds , and I continued to drive . Later while pulling out of a parking space in reverse ,I stepped on the brakes but the vehicle did not stop . I pumped the brakes to no avail . After the collision , the brakes worked again when the tow truck driver placed the vehicle on the flatbed .The Hyundai dealer , after the vehicle had been in their possession for several weeks with the battery disconnected, said there was no problem They also had a factory rep look at the vehicle and he made a report . We have not been able to get a copy of the report . Vehicle is still at the dealership . When notified by the factory rep of their claim that the vehicle had no problems , the vehicle had been out of service more then 30 days .

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2023-2024 Ioniq 5 vehicles. The high voltage battery cells may contain misaligned electrodes, which can lead to a fire while parked or driving.
Abhilfe: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures and limit their charge to a maximum of 80% until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will replace the high voltage battery system assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 31, 2026. Owners may contact Hyundai's customer service at 855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 305. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on July 3, 2026.

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2023 IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6, and Genesis GV60 vehicles. The rear inner driveshaft may have been improperly heat-treated, allowing it to break under load and resulting in a loss of drive power.
Abhilfe: Dealers will replace the rear inner driveshaft, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 29, 2024. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's numbers for this recall are 253(H), 017G(G).
