Car had smoke engine overheating this is the 3rd engine I got sick from the smoke I don’t feel safe in that car
The panoramic sunroof glass suddenly shattered while the vehicle was being driven on the interstate, with no visible impact, object strike, or prior damage observed. The component involved is the sunroof glass panel, and it has already been removed and replaced through insurance repairs, so it is not available for inspection (however, pictures are available upon request). The incident created a loud, explosion-like sound and resulted in glass fragments falling into the interior of the vehicle, including onto the driver and the front-seat passenger, causing minor injuries. This also created a significant safety risk due to driver distraction, panic, and the potential for more serious injury while the vehicle was in motion at highway speeds. The issue has not been reproduced or independently duplicated by a dealer or service center; however, it was inspected and documented by the insurance company and repair facility during the claims and repair process, which confirmed that full glass replacement was necessary. The vehicle or component has been inspected by insurance representatives and a repair shop, but it has not been inspected by the manufacturer or law enforcement. There were no warning lamps, dashboard messages, or any prior symptoms indicating a problem before the failure occurred, and the sunroof appeared to fail suddenly and without any advance indication while the vehicle was in motion.
JULY 2018 CAR BEGAN MAKING NOISE WHEN TURNING ON AND BACKING UP. THE NOISE WENT AWAY WHEN I BEGAN TO DRIVE. TOOK TO DEALERSHIP FOR OIL CHANGE AND THEY COULDN'T DIAGNOSIS THE PROBLEM. PROBLEM BEGAN GETTING WORSE, MENTIONED IT AT NEXT OIL CHANGE. NOW MIND YOU, I DRIVE A LOT!! CAR IS 2 YEARS OLD AND HAS 83K. BETWEEN JULY AND DECEMBER 2018 THE CAR RECEIVED MINIMUM OF 4 OIL CHANGES ALL DONE AT THE SAME DEALERSHIP WHO SAYS IT'S NORMAL EVEN WHEN I COMPLAINED OF SMELLING GAS. AFTER RETURNING TO VA FROM MI, THE LIGHTS ON THE DASH ALL TURNED ON WHILE DRIVING, SPEEDOMETER JUMPED WHERE EVER IT WANTED IF IT WANTED TO MOVE AT ALL. TOOK TO NEAREST DEALERSHIP, DIAGNOSIS WAS BAD VACUUM PUMP. IT WAS REPLACED AND SAID ALL MY DRIVING ISSUES AND GAS SMELL WOULD STOP. NOPE....TOOK BACK IN, DIAGNOSIS IS FAULTY EXHAUST MANIFOLD. REPLACED. TWO WEEKS LATER IT STARTS TO ACT UP AGAIN LIKE IT DID THE FIRST TIME.
On [July 4, 2025], while driving, my vehicle experienced a sudden loss of power followed by smoke and flames coming from the engine compartment. The fire required emergency response and caused significant damage to the vehicle. Thankfully, no one was injured, but the incident posed a serious risk to my safety and others on the road. I had not received any prior warning signs such as engine knocking or warning lights. The fire appears to be directly related to the known defect outlined in Recall 209. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this incident and ensure Hyundai is held accountable for the full scope of this defect, including fire risk. I am also seeking assistance in ensuring Hyundai provides appropriate compensation or resolution for the damages caused.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2017 HYUNDAI TUCSON. WHILE DRIVING 20-25 MPH DOWN A ROAD PREPARING TO MERGE, THE VEHICLE STALLED AND CONTINUED TO ROLL FORWARD. THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO RESTART THE VEHICLE BUT FAILED. THE CONTACT NOTICED WHITE SMOKE AND STOPPED THE VEHICLE BY ENGAGING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. THE CONTACT GATHERED SOME OF HER BELONGINGS AS THE SMOKE TURNED GRAY AND GOT 20 FEET AWAY FROM THE VEHICLE. THERE WERE FLAMES NOTICED COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. A BYSTANDER ATTEMPTED TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE WITH A FIRE EXTINGUISHER MEANWHILE THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED TO THE SCENE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER DUE TO THE INCIDENT. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT ALSO MENTIONED THAT HER CHILD WOULD RIDE IN THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE AND THE SAFETY SEAT WAS DESTROYED DURING THE FIRE. THE CHILD WAS NOT PRESENT AT THE TIME OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 17V226000 (ENGINE) BY ROUTE 2 HYUNDAI DEALER (743 NORTH MAIN STREET, LEOMINSTER, MA 01453, (978) 534-9999) IN MAY OF 2019 DUE TO THE INITIAL FAILURE IN JANUARY OF 2019 WHERE THE ENGINE BLEW UP. THE DEALER REPLACED THE ENGINE, BUT THE FAILURE REOCCURRED WHICH LEAD TO THE ENTIRE VEHICLE CATCHING ON FIRE MOST RECENT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND TOWED AWAY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 118,000. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN.
Vehicle was involved in an accident where the brakes were all the way to the floor and ABS never engaged, resulting in the brakes locking up and rear ending another vehicle.
AIRBAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY AT UTILITY POLE COLLISION.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 HYUNDAI TUCSON. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION SLIPPED AND THE VEHICLE JERKED VIOLENTLY SOMETIMES. ON ONE OCCASION, IN A SHOPPING PLAZA PARKING LOT, THE VEHICLE JERKED VIOLENTLY, THE STEERING WHEEL SEIZED, AND THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN. THE BRAKES FAILED TO OPERATE AND THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE CRASHED INTO A PARKED VEHICLE TWICE. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED INJURIES TO THE NECK AND BACK, WHICH REQUIRED MEDICAL ASSISTANCE. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BY THE POLICE TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO AN INSURANCE BODY SHOP TO BE DIAGNOSED, BUT A FAILURE COULD NOT BE LOCATED. THE BODY DAMAGE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 2,000.
THE VEHICLE FAILED TO ACCELERATE ON A CIRCLE CAUSING ME AND ANOTHER VEHICLE TO COLLIDE. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR INTO THE SHOP ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS THE FIRST TIME AT 150 MILES ON THE ODOMETER AND CONTINUING FOR OVER A YEAR, EACH TIME THE DEALERSHIP INSISTS THAT NO PROBLEM EXISTS OR EXISTED, NEITHER HYUNDAI NOR THE DEALERSHIP WILL ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THERE IS AN INHERENT SAFETY ISSUE WITH THIS 7 SPEED TRANSMISSION, THIS VEHICLE DECELERATES, HESITATES FROM A STOP AND DOES NOT ALWAYS HANDLE IN A SAFE MANNER. I AM EXTREMELY CAREFUL AND COGNIZANT OF THESE ISSUES WHEN I AM DRIVING ALWAYS TAKING EXTRA PRECAUTIONS HOWEVER, IN THIS INSTANCE THAT SLIGHT HESITATION IN ACCELERATION WAS ENOUGH TO PRODUCE SEVERE DAMAGE TO MY VEHICLE , SUBSTANTIAL MONETARY LOSS AND INJURY.
AFTER BACKING OUT OF MY GARAGE, I LEFT THE CAR RUNNING IN MY DRIVEWAY. THE CAR WAS STATIONARY IN THE DRIVEWAY FOR ABOUT 5 MINUTES. AFTER WHICH TIME THE CAR ACCELERATED THROUGH MY GARAGE AND HIT ME, PINNING ME AGAINST THE WALL OF MY GARAGE FOR ABOUT 5 MINUTES. THE ACCELERATION THEN SUBSIDED AND THE CAR SLIGHTLY BACKED UP AND REMAINED STATIONARY GIVING ME ENOUGH ROOM TO WEDGE OUT BETWEEN MY CAR AND THE GARAGE WALL. I'VE BEEN HAVING INTERMITTENT ISSUES WITH ACCELERATION. AT TIMES THE VEHICLE SURGES WHEN I STEP ON THE ACCELERATOR AND OTHER TIMES THE RPMS SWING WAY UP AND THE VEHILCE LAGS CREATING A DANGEROUS SITUATION WHEN TRYING TO CHANGE LANES ON THE HIGHWAY AT FASTER SPEEDS.
VEHICLE'S ENGINE IS INTERMITTENTLY MAKING NOISES AGAIN AFTER EXHAUST MANIFOLD WAS FIXED AND ALSO INTERMITTENTLY RELEASING CARBON MONOXIDE INTO THE CABIN OF THE VEHICLE. I HAVE A VIDEO OF THE CARBON MONOXIDE READING, BUT THE SYSTEM WILL NOT ALLOW ME TO UPLOAD.
THE DUAL-CLUTCH TRANSMISSION IS INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS, AS IT HAS AN EXTREME DELAYED ACCELERATION WHEN COMING OFF A COMPLETE STOP OR JUST INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING, IN WHICH THE ENGINE WILL REDLINE IN RPM. PARKING LOTS ARE ABSOLUTE MISERY AS WELL, AS THE VEHICLE JERKS HEAVILY AT LOW SPEEDS. ANOTHER SHOCKING ISSUE WITH THIS TRANSMISSION IS THAT IT WILL PROPEL THE CAR FORWARD 3-5 MPH EVEN WITHOUT PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL AND GOING UP A HILL. IT'S HARD TO BELIEVE THAT THIS TRANSMISSION IS LEGAL TO SELL TO CAR BUYERS AND I HOPE THE NHTSA TAKES FURTHER ACTION AGAINST HYUNDAI. I'VE ONLY OWNED THIS VEHICLE LESS THAN 2 WEEKS AND I'M GOING TO BE OUT THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS, AS I CAN'T DRIVE THIS VEHICLE. I'M CURRENTLY SEARCHING FOR THE BEST OPTION OF REMEDIATION; PLEASE CONTACT ME IF YOU NEED ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. I TRULY HOPE HYUNDAI DOES NOT GET AWAY WITH RELEASING SUCH A DANGEROUS PRODUCT INTO THEIR VEHICLES.
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, an abnormal pop sound could be heard coming from the engine. The oil warning light was illuminated. The contact was about to merge to the side of the road when the contact noticed a glow on the underside of the vehicle. The contact then pulled into a parking lot, smoke was emitting from under the hood, and entered the vehicle through the A/C vents, and noticed the flames under the hood. The contact stated that the heater was turned on, and the contact immediately turned off the heater. The contact opened the hood and used a fire extinguisher to extinguish the flames. The fire department was called to check the vehicle to make sure the fire was extinguished. The fire department used a thermo reader to make sure that there was no more risk of a fire. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The contact towed the vehicle to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the engine had failed. The contact was informed that the vehicle had an open recall pending: NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V727000 (ENGINE). The dealer informed the contact that since the recall was not performed, the engine had failed. The contact stated that he was the second owner and that the vehicle was purchased in 2022. The contact was unaware of the recall at the time of purchase. The dealer refused to complete the recall repairs. The vehicle was not repaired. Most recently, the contact was informed that the connecting rod failed and punctured the bottom end of the engine. The vehicle remained at the dealer unrepaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and denied the recall repairs. The failure mileage was approximately 107,000.
The contact owned a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that the vehicle was unoccupied and parked at the residence for a couple of days, he received a call from a neighbor informing that there was a fire at his residence. The contact was not home at the time and upon arrival, he observed the vehicle engulfed in flames. The fire then quickly spread from the vehicle to the stand-alone garage and driveway causing damage. The contact and a neighbor attempted to extinguish the fire but were unsuccessful. The fire department extinguished the fire. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed by the insurance company to the salvage lot where a forensic specialist was pending an investigation per the manufacturer and was yet to produce any information. The contact mentioned that the vehicle burned leaving only the framing remains. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.
Was driving down the road when it started making a metallic noises then all of a sudden the car sputtered, shot flames and smoke out from underneath the car and metal debris went flying. I had to tow my car to the dealership where they still have it. They said there is a hole in the engine block where a rod was thrown. After this incident we looked more into the problem to find that other Hyundaia have had the same issue. No check engine light came on, the car didn't over heat or anything it was random.
