BYSTANDER WHO HEARD/SAW ACCIDENT SHIFTED CAR TO PARK (WAS PHYSICALLY IN REVERSE WHEN THEY GOT IT). I HAD HEARD THAT OLDER EXPLORERS MAY HAVE HAD AN ISSUE.
ON JANUARY 12, 2020, WHILE DRIVING HOME TO FLORIDA FROM GEORGIA, INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT THAT SERIOUSLY INJURED 26 YEAR OLD DRIVER AND HER 2 CHILDREN, AGES 8 AND 4. ALTHOUGH THE CHILDREN WERE ABLE TO GO HOME WITH WEEKS OF THE ACCIDENT, THE DRIVER WAS LEFT WITH SEVERE INJURIES AND IMPAIRMENTS, TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY, AND IN A COMA FOR NEARLY 2 MONTHS. THE 26 YEAR OLD DRIVER RECENTLY CAME HOME IN MARCH AFTER SPENDING TIME AT BROOKS REHABILITATION, BUT WE RECENTLY RECEIVED A PHONE CALL FROM THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THE CAR WAS BOUGHT ABOUT RECALL 19S17. WE ARE WONDERING IF THIS RECALL COULD HAVE POSSIBLY PLAYED A PART IN THIS ACCIDENT, AS SHE WAS BRAKING WHEN THE VEHICLE BECAME UNCONTROLLABLE AND VEERED OFF THE ROAD, AND SHE WENT HEAD ON INTO A SEMI-TRUCK GOING THE OTHER DIRECTION ON THE HIGHWAY. *TR
I PURCHASED MY VEHICLE FROM THE JENNINGS ANDERSON FORD DEALER. IT HAD AROUND 17,000 MILES ON IT. SHORTLY AFTER I VEHICLE, I BROUGHT IT IN BECAUSE THE EXHAUST FUMES ARE BEING SUCKED INTO THE VEHICLE WHEN I ACCELERATE SUCH AS GETTING ON THE FREEWAY. DAVID SAVINICH (SERVICE ADVISER) TOLD ME THAT FORD WAS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND THEY HAD A FIX FOR IT. THEY INSTALLED THEIR FIX BUT IT IS STILL SUCKING IN EXHAUST FUMES. I TALKED TO JEFF ASHER (SERVICE DEPT MANAGER) AND I ASKED HIM WHETHER FORD HAD A FIX FOR IT. I WAS TOLD NO. I ASKED JEFF TO CALL ME IF THERE WAS A FIX. IT HAS BEEN OVER A YEAR AND THEIR IS STILL NO REPAIR. I GET A BAD HEADACHE EVERY TIME I GET ON THE FREEWAY. IT IS SO BAD THAT IT ALSO MAKES ME NAUSEATED. I AM UNABLE TO USE THE AIR CONDITIONER RECIRCULATATION IN THE CAR.
2011-2015 FORD EXPLORER THERE IS A "DESIGN FLAW" IN WHICH THE INTERNAL CABIN AIR VENTS ARE SUCKING IN EXHAUST AND CARBON MONOXIDE. FORD HAS ISSUED A FIX (TSB 14-0130) BUT NOT A RECALL AND THERE IS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT. FOR ME IT IS HAPPENING ON ACCELERATION AND GOING UP STEEP GRADES AND THERE IS A SULFUR/MECHANICAL BURNING SMELL THAT WAFTS IN. THE KIDS AND I, AS WELL AS ANYONE ELSE IN THE CAR FOR LONG DURATIONS, HAVE BEEN GETTING MIGRAINES, DIZZY AND JUST FLAT OUT SICK. I DRIVE FOR WORK AND THE DIZZINESS AND MIGRAINES HAS BECOME SO FREQUENT, AS WELL AS MIXING UP WORDS WHEN I'M SPEAKING, THAT I WAS BEGINNING TO THINK SOMETHING IS SERIOUSLY WRONG WITH ME. I PASSED OUT AND WRECKED IT WHEN I HAD ONLY 20,000 MILES ON IT AND I KEPT SAYING "I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT HAPPENED, I JUST PASSED OUT". I HAD GONE UP THE GRADE ON 101, WHERE THE FUMES BECOME EXTREMELY POTENT, EXITED, AND HAD JUST GOT ON TO THE RANCH ROAD AND WAS GOING SLOW AND I WAS (FOR THE MOST PART) UN-INJURED AND NO ONE WAS WITH ME. I HAVE HAD IT IN 5 TIMES FOR THE SMELL BUT IT WASN'T UNTIL THIS LAST TIME THAT THEY TOLD ME WHAT WAS REALLY GOING ON. FORD WOULDN'T PAY FOR THE FIX EVEN THOUGH I HAVE A FORD PREMIUM 100K MILE WARRANTY BECAUSE THEIR WARRANTY EXCLUDES "DESIGN FLAWS" BUT FORTUNATELY HENRY CURTIS FORD PICKED UP THE TAB AND I HAD TO PAY THE $100 DEDUCTIBLE. I DROVE THIS VEHICLE CROSS COUNTRY, WHILE TOWING A TRUCK ON TRAILER, BACK WHILE TOWING A TRAILER, AND AGAIN WITH A U-HAUL FROM LAS VEGAS TO VIRGINIA (UP STEEP GRADES, AND THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS, ENGINE UNDER QUITE A LOAD, WHILE IN THE SUMMER, USING A/C) I GOT A HEADACHE AND NAUSEAU. MY DAUGHTER AND NEPHEW, WHO WERE PASSENGERS, DID AS WELL. I GOT SLEEPY BEHIND THE WHEEL (THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN TO ME AND HAS NEVER HAPPENED TO ME). YOU CAN SMELL THE EXHAUST. I INSTALLED A CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR, AND IT HAS GONE OFF TWICE. FORD HAS DONE SOME "FIXES" INCLUDING REPROGRAMMING A/C. WELL, IF YOU USE THE BUTTONS, INSTEAD OF THE TOUCH SCREEN, YOU CAN UNKNOWINGLY OVERRIDE THIS REPROGRAMMING. THEY DID NOT TELL ME THIS. I GO THROUGH THE GEARS IN THE MANUAL MODE AND DRIVE THIS HARD. YOU CAN STILL SMELL EXHAUST AND GET SYMPTOMS. BORROW A FIRE FIGHTERS "SNIFFER" AND DRIVE THE VEHICLE HARD AND WATCH THE READOUT. IT CANT POSSIBLY TAKE THIS LONG OR BE THAT DIFFICULT TO RESOLVE THIS INVESTIGATION. YOU CAN EVEN PUT A CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR IN THE VEHICLE AND WATCH-SIMPLE. GO THROUGH THE GEARS MANUALLY, RED-LINING THE VEHICLE YOU WILL GET THE SMELL AND SYMPTOMS. DRIVE THE VEHICLE HARD UP A STEEP GRADE, YOU WILL GET THE SYMPTOMS. TOW WITH THE VEHICLE UP A GRADE, YOU WILL GET THE SMELL AND SYMPTOMS, ALL WITH A/C ON RECIRCULATE. LESS SO WITH OUT IT BEING ON RECIRCULATE. THIS HAS HAPPENED FORM THE FIRST TRIP OF 09/07/2015 TO CURRENT.
My vehicle was struck by a tractor trailer at 55-60 mph while sitting still. The impact caused my vehicle to spin and be embedded into the guardrail. None of the airbags deployed.
I ATTEMPTED TO SLOW THE VEHICLE, PREPARING TO STOP. I WAS TRAVELING BETWEEN 65/70 MPH. WHEN PRESSING ON THE BREAKS THE VEHICLE DID NOT SLOW DOWN. I PUMPED THE BREAKS. THE CARS IN FRONT OF ME WHERE AT A STOP AND GETTING CLOSER VERY QUICKLY. I PUSHED AS HARD AS I COULD ON THE BREAK AND THEN TRIED TO PUSH ON THE EMERGENCY BREAK LOCATED ON THE FLOOR. IT ONLY KICKED BACK. SECONDS LATER I HAD A DIRECT IMPACT WITH THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. AIRBAG DEPLOYED! THERE ARE NO SKID MARKS ON THE ROAD! THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT STOP!!!
ON MAY 31, 2017, I WAS INVOLVED IN A COLLISION IN WHICH MY 2013 FORD EXPLORER STRUCK A RED LIGHT RUNNER AT APPROXIMATELY 35 - 40 MPH. MY VEHICLE SUSTAINED SIGNIFICANT FRONT END DAMAGE. SO MUCH SO, IT'S A TOTAL LOSS. THE MOST ALARMING DETAIL IS THAT MY AIRBAGS DIDN'T DEPLOY AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT!! NEITHER THE DRIVER SIDE NOR THE PASSENGER SIDE. I KNOW THAT FORD HAS A NUMBER OF RECALLS IN REGARDS TO DEFECTIVE AIRBAGS BUT I COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING IN REGARDS TO THE 2013 FORD EXPLORER EVEN THOUGH THERE HAVE BEEN A NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS. FORD REALLY NEEDS TO LOOK INTO THESE DEFECTIVE AIRBAGS WITHIN THIS MODEL BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED OR SEVERELY INJURED. NO WARNING LIGHTS, NO AIRBAG LIGHTS, ETC... FORD IS EVEN REFUSING TO SEND A "REP" TO WHERE MY VEHICLE IS BEING HELD TO CONDUCT AN INSPECTION OF IT...

However, the contact was informed that the repair was completed on the contact's vehicle on February 5, 2020. The contact t was advised to contact the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 157,625.

AGAIN, THE CONTACT'S SYMPTOMS RETURNED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT DURING A FOUR HOUR ROAD TRIP, ONE OF HER FAMILY MEMBERS SUFFERED THE SAME SYMPTOMS. NO ONE RECEIVED MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE SAME DEALER AND IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE DUCT TAPE ON THE EXHAUST FELL OFF. THE DUCT TAPE WAS REPLACED, BUT THE SYMPTOMS CONTINUED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE SAME DEALER WHERE THE TECHNICIAN TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE AND STATED THAT THERE WAS NO FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE SITUATION AND DID NOT ASSIST. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 48,700.
ELECTRICAL OUTLET IN REAR CENTER CONSOLE WAS COMPLETELY PULLED OUT WHILE TRYING TO UNPLUG COMPUTER EXPOSING ELECTRICAL WIRES ELECTROCUTING MY SON AND NEPHEW. THIS HAPPENED AT NIGHT WITH THE VEHICLE IN MOTION.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 7,500.

In addition, the contact was a certified mechanic and stated that the failure indicated a possible failed electronic steering module. The contact referenced recall NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V286000(Steering) which had a similar failure description, however the contact VIN was not associated with the recall. The dealer was made aware of the failure, however the contact was informed that the contact's vehicle was not associated with the recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The contact was informed that the contact's VIN was not associated with any unknown recalls. The contact was advised to contact the NHTSA Hotline and report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 89,953.

Rimedio: Dealers will inspect and replace the A-pillar trim as necessary, free of charge. This will be a phased campaign, with the remedy becoming available in different phases based on model years. Rimedio: Dealer will inspect for the presence of a CABJ. If a CABJ of any design is found, the dealer will inspect the tightness of the CABJ, and replace the CABJ, knuckle, and/or toe link as necessary, free of charge. Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain Wheel Hub Bearing assemblies, part number HB5Z-1104-C, incorrectly listed as being for installation on the rear axles of 2011-2017 Ford Explorer 4X2 vehicles. These bearings assemblies were manufactured without a self retention feature, possibly resulting in the separation of the wheel or wheel end.
Rimedio: Ford will notify the distributors of the hubs specifying that they are to only be used on drive axles. It is believed that none of the hubs were purchased from Ford dealers for the incorrect application. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2011-2013 Ford Explorer vehicles manufactured May 17, 2010, through February 28, 2012. The affected vehicles may experience an intermittent connection in the electric power steering gear, which can cause a loss of the motor position sensor signal resulting in a shut down of the power steering assist.
Rimedio: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will update the Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) software, free of charge. If a vehicle shows a history of a loss of motor position sensor signal when the vehicle is brought in for the recall remedy, its steering rack assembly will be replaced, free of charge. In the affected vehicles, with sufficient door openings and closings, the child safety locks may change from an activated position to a deactivated position without notice.

In the affected vehicles, the fuel tanks may have a marginally sealed seam in the side of the tank. As a result, the fuel tanks may not provide the expected strength in the event of an impact. The tanks may also leak.
