I WAS MAKING A LANE CHANGE IN ORDER TO MERGE ONTO THE FREEWAY TRAFFIC. WITHOUT HITTING ANY OBJECTS, UNEXPECTED DEPLOYMENT OF THE FRONT SIDE AIRBAG (DRIVER SIDE) OCCURRED. MY HEAD WAS HIT BY SOME FLYING OBJECTS FROM THE DEPLOYMENT. VEHICLE WAS PULLED OVER TO THE SHOULDER AND COULDN'T BE STARTED AFTER THAT FOR ALMOST 15 MINS. FINALLY CHP SHOWED UP AND HELPED ME TO START MY CAR SO THAT I COULD DRIVE IT TO LOCAL DEALER. AFTER FEW DAYS OF "INVESTIGATION", THE DEALER DECIDED IT WAS NOT THE FAULT OF THE AIRBAG SYSTEM. INSTEAD, THEY BLAMED MY REAR TIRE ON MY PASSENGER SIDE CAUSING THE DEPLOYMENT. AS A RESULT, THEY REFUSED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE UNDER BMW'S COST. *JB

THEN I SMELLED SOMETHING WITH A DISTINCT ODOR 4:08 PM I DROVE ONTO EAST BOUND I-70 AND CONTINUED ON I-70 UNTIL THE RAMP TO SOUTHBOUND I-225, APPROXIMATELY ONE MILE OR SO. THE ODOR GOT A LOT WORSE AS I ENTERED ONTO THE RAMP. SMOKE STARTED TO COME OUT OF THE BMW FRONT VENTS AND THEN A FLAME CAME FROM UNDER THE STEERING WHEEL. I WAS NOW ON I-225 HEADING SOUTHBOUND AT ABOUT 55 MILES PER HOUR IN THE LEFT HAND LANE. AS I WAS MOVING OVER TO THE RIGHT HAND LANE THE INSTRUMENT PANEL LIT UP. A LOT OF SMOKE CAME OUT FROM ALL OF THE FRONT VENTS, AND ESPECIALLY THE FRONT DEFROSTER. I LOOKED AT THE ENGINE TEMPERATURE LIGHT AND IT WAS NORMAL. THE AUTOMOBILE WAS RUNNING FINE. I TURNED THE CAR OFF. THEN MORE SMOKE STARTED COMING OUT OF THE VENTS. THEN, FLAMES STARTED COMING OUT OF THE VENTS AND FRONT DEFROSTER. 4:10 PM THE ENGINE WAS STILL TURNED OFF. I GOT OUT OF THE CAR. FLAMES AND BLACK SMOKE WENT THROUGH THE CONVERTIBLE ROOF STRAIGHT UP. 4:20 PM THE AURORA FIRE DEPARTMENT AND MORE AURORA POLICE CAME.. THEY TOWED THE CAR AWAY TO THE IMPOUND LOT. NHTSA #11427015
Gas tank strap that holds up the gas tank tore off on the part that is supposed to be welded on the car. One end is bolted on, the other has a welded bracket. That bracket broke off and my gas tank and bracket were dragging until I pulled off of the road. Luckily the entire gas tank didn’t fall out because if it would have, the tank would’ve broke and caused a massive spill of gas, since the tank was full of fuel. There is no warning lamps for this, a weld shouldn’t just break off, and I can’t find any replacements to fix it or replace it at all.
