WHILE ACCELERATING MY 2014 BMW 328D I HEARD A GRINDING NOISE AND THE CAR HIT THE BRAKES SO HARD THAT THE SEAT BELT PINNED ME AGAINST THE SEAT AND MY CHEST HURT AFTER THAT FOR A COUPLE DAYS. I CALLED BMW ROADSIDE AND THE POLICE TO ASSIST WITH TRAFFIC SINCE I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, WAS LATE EVENING AND RAINING ALSO. THE POLICE OFFICER TRIED TO MOVE THE CAR BUT THE WHEELS WERE LOCKED AND WAS UNABLE TO PUT IT IN NEUTRAL OR MOVE. WHILE GETTING OUT OF CAR HE TELLS ME THAT I AM LUCKY IN HIS OWN WORDS "ON THIS WEATHER ON THE FREEWAY YOU WOULD'VE BEEN DEAD BY NOW". ALSO THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER HAD THE SAME LINE AS THE OFFICER AND HE DRAGGED THE CAR ON THE BED SINCE THE WHEELS WERE LOCKED. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND BMW DIAGNOSED IT AS "FUEL PUMP BLEW UP INTERNALLY AND DISTRIBUTED METAL SHAVINGS THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM AND THROUGH INJECTORS." 4 INJECTORS NEED REPLACEMENT ALONG WITH THE FUEL RAIL, THE FUEL PUMP AND REPAIRS MADE TOT THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM INCLUDING THE TANK. BMW WILL COVER EVERYTHING SINCE THE CAR IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY ( I AM AT 45 K MILES)! MOST TRAUMATIZING EXPERIENCE OF MY 40 YEARS LIFE IN A 50K+ CAR! BMW NEVER WARNED ME OF POSSIBLE FUEL PUMP FAILURE PROBLEM WITH THEIR DIESEL CARS AND NO CAR SHOULD PIN YOU WITH THE SEAT BELT AGAINST THE SEAT UNLESS IT'S AN ACCIDENT!
12/2023 - Sewell BMW replaced EGR, all H/P fuel lines at injectors due to corrosion, injector harness due to heat damage to the wire jackets, cracked coolant pipe. At 145,976 that's an additional 22,315 miles on the 60,000 mile 2015 replacement engine. Total repair costs $3,939.45. 08/23/2024 - Passed inspection, odometer 149,701. 09/09/2024- Only 2 weeks later an estimate of 4,000 miles after replacing injector harness and H/P fuel lines, engine went up in flames, reason unknown. Pictures attached, vehicle was a total loss.
I was driving down the Massachusetts Turnpike with my 2 year old grandson and I experienced a power loss in the car. I immediately pulled over and opened the hood to find a fire starting in the engine compartment. I got my grandson out of the car and within minutes it was engulfed in flames. This in my opinion is a direct result of the BMW recall 21V-907 and I am really shocked drivers falling under this recall are still driving these vehicles. Action needs to happen before serious injury or death occurs.
The contact owned a 2014 BMW 328D. The contact stated while stopped at a stoplight there was smoke and flames coming from the driver's side of the hood. The contact was able to exit the vehicle safely. The fire department came to extinguish the fire. The fire and police departments were present and filed reports. The fire department stated that the fire origin was from the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR). There was no medical assistance needed or injuries sustained. The vehicle was towed to a collision center. The vehicle was deemed a total loss. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number 21V907000 ( Fuel System). The failure mileage was 152,000.
The contact owns a 2014 BMW 328D. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V907000 (Fuel System, Diesel) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated while the vehicle was at a complete stop at the traffic light, she noticed smoke coming out from underneath the hood of the vehicle and she could smell a burning odor through the vents. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact continued to drive the vehicle. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred while parking the vehicle in her garage. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer twice where it was diagnosed that it was a coolant failure associated with NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V907000 (Fuel System, Diesel). The dealer notated in the diagnostic report that the vehicle was drivable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 55,265. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM BMW STATING AN EGR COOLER RECALL WAS ISSUED FOR MY VEHICLE. I TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO BELLEVUE BMW AFTER SMELLING DIESEL INSIDE THE PASSENGER CABIN. THEY KEPT THE VEHICLE OVER NIGHT AND HAD ME RENT A VEHICLE WHILE THEY KEPT THE CAR OVERNIGHT. UPON RETURNING I WAS TOLD THAT MY EGR COOLER DID IN FACT NEED REPLACING. I WAS INFORMED THAT THEY WOULD NOT BE FIXING THE PROBLEM AT THAT TIME BECAUSE THEY HAD A CATCHY LEGAL BLIND TO HIDE BEHIND. ' NO REMEDY AT THIS TIME'. THE SIMPLE TRUTH IS THEY COULD OF SOLD ME THE NEW EGR COOLER. BUT THEY CHOSE NOT TO DO THAT EITHER. I ASKED THE SERVICE ADVISER IF IT WAS SAFE TO DRIVE AND HE ASSURED ME IT WAS. AS IT TURNS OUT HE LIED TO ME. A SHORT TIME LATER THE WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE THE INTAKE MANIFOLD CAUGHT FIRE. THERE WAS SMOKE AND A BLACK SOOT BELLOWING OUT FROM BEHIND THE CAR AND WHEN I GOT PULLED OFF THE ROAD LARGE AMOUNTS OF THICK BLACK SMOKE BILLOWED OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD. I CALLED FOR A TOW TRUCK AND HAD IT REPAIRED AT AN APPROVED REPAIR FACILITY. 2400.00 LATER THE CAR WAS BACK ON THE ROAD FOR A SHORT TIME. A SHORT WHILE LATER I GOT TO WORK AND NOTICED A LOUD CLICKING SOUND FROM THE ENGINE. TOOK THE CAR BACK TO BELLEVUE BMW AND THEY TRIED TO TELL ME THE SHOP WHERE I WAS GETTING MY OIL CHANGES DONE WERE NOT CHANGING MY OIL. THIS DELIBERATE ATTEMPT TO MISDIRECT FAULT FROM KNOWINGLY PUTTING ME IN A POSITION TO BE HARMED FROM DECEITFUL BUSINESS PRACTICES AND BLATANT DISREGARD FOR MY SAFETY IS TRULY DISTURBING AND WOEFULLY DISAPPOINTING. I CALLED BMW NORTH AMERICA AND SPOKE TO THEM ABOUT MY ISSUE AND IT DID NOT SHOW MY CAR HAVING ANY RECALLS. THERE SEEMS TO BE A DISCONNECT IF THE VIN I PROVIDED TO BMW NORTH AMERICA AND NHTSA DOES NOT SHOW ANY RECALLS FOR MY VEHICLE. THIS IS A
EGR VALVE LOCKED OPEN, AS SEDIMENT ACCUMULATED IN THE VACUUM LINE FROM THE LEAKING OF ANTI-FREEZE INTO THE VALVE. MANIFOLD DEVELOPED HOLES, AS THE EGR OVERHEATED DUE THE VALVE LOCKING OPEN. THE SMELL OF ANTI-FREEZE AND DIESEL FILLED THE CAR AS SMOKE STARTED COMING FROM THE ENGINE, WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY. HAD TO HAVE THE MANIFOLD REPLACED, AS THE MANIFOLD HAD FOUR HOLES IN IT, AND THE EGR VALVE VACUUM LINE HAD TO BE CLEARED. REPORTED THE ISSUE TO KUNI BMW, WHO NEVER REPORTED THE ISSUE AND WARNED ME TO NOT DRIVE THE CAR IN THE CONDITION THAT IT WAS IN BEFORE THE REPAIR. KUNI ALSO SAID THAT THEY HAD NEVER HEARD OF AN EGR VALVE ISSUE AND ANTI-FREEZE CAUSING SEDIMENT TO PLUG THE VACUUM LINE. THIS IS THE SAME ISSUE THAT BMW HAS HAD TO ISSUE A RECALL FOR 2015-2017 MODELS IN EUROPE AND S. KOREA. KUNI BMW KNEW OF THE RECALLS IN S. KOREA AND EUROPE WHEN THEY TALKED TO ME. I AM REPORTING THIS TO NTSB, AS BMW NA TOLD ME THAT THEY HAD ONLY MADE A INFORMAL REPORT TO NTSB, AND THEY FELT IT WAS NOT A MAJOR ISSUE. MY CAR ALMOST CAUGHT ON FIRE AND BURNED, WHILE MY PREGNANT WIFE AND DAUGHTER WERE RIDING WITH ME, BUT KUNI REFUSED TO REPORT IT AND BMW DIDN'T CONSIDER IT A BIG ISSUE. SAD. I HAVE SEEN MANY OTHER REPORTS OF THE SAME PROBLEM - BMW SHOULD HAVE RECALLED THE CAR TO FIX THE FUEL SYSTEM BEFORE I HAD AN ACCIDENT. NOW MY CAR IS DEVALUED AND I DO NOT HAVE SAME LEVEL OF CONFIDENCE IN DRIVING IT.

The head air bag inflator may fail at the weld joint, which can cause gas to leak from the inflator or result in an inflator rupture.
Solution : Dealers will replace the head air bags, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 4, 2024. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2013-2018 328d, 328d xDrive, 2014-2018 328d Sports Wagon, 328d xDrive Sports Wagon, 2014-2016 535d, 535d xDrive, 2015 740Ld xDrive, 2015-2017 X3 xDrive28d SAV, and 2014-2017 X5 xDrive35d SAV diesel vehicles equipped with an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) module with an integrated cooler. The EGR cooler may leak internally, causing coolant to mix with diesel engine soot, which could result in smoldering particles and a melting intake manifold.
Solution : Dealers will replace the EGR cooler and inspect the intake manifold, replacing it as necessary, free of charge. This recall includes all vehicles previously recalled under 18V-755. Vehicles previously recalled under 18V-755 will need to have the new remedy performed for this recall. An interim owner notification letter was mailed on January 18, 2022. The remedy is expected to be available in June 2022. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 6, 2022. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

The constant-velocity joint which transfers power between the transfer case and the rear drive shaft, may become damaged, possibly resulting in loss of power to the rear wheels.
Solution : BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the constant-velocity joint and inspect the transfer case, replacing it if necessary, free of charge. The recall began May 22, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Solution : BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the EGR cooler as necessary. If a leak has already occurred, the engine intake manifold will also be replaced. BMW North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2012-2015 320i, 320xi, 328i, 328xi, 335i, 335xi, and ActiveHybrid3 vehicles manufactured October 20, 2011, to June 22, 2015, 2014-2015 328xi Sports Wagon vehicles manufactured March 21, 2013, to March 17, 2015, 2014-2015 328d, 328xd vehicles manufactured June 28, 2013, to April 21, 2015, and 2014-2015 328xd Sports Wagon vehicles manufactured July 5, 2013, to April 21, 2015. The affected vehicles may have been programmed with new software that inadvertently makes the front side marker lights inoperative in conjunction with the parking lights or the headlights. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
